Former Sibley star Phil Haig happier as a baseball player

Phil Haig thought he was on the verge of doing something that doesn't happen too often in the demanding world of NCAA Division I athletics.

Conditioning programs were preparing the former Henry Sibley High School standout to play football and baseball this year at the University of Illinois. Haig, an all-state quarterback and pitcher at Sibley, was optimistic about being a two-sport athlete in college until the rigorous schedule changed his mind.

All-Star Game Recap

St. John's football coach John Gagliardi made the short drive from his home on the Collegeville campus on Saturday to check out the Minnesota High School All-Star Football Game at St. Cloud State's Husky Stadium. Gagliardi wanted to get a look at the five seniors who will suit up for the Johnnies in the fall.

Funding cuts jeopardize extra-curricular activities

While education needs to be the backbone of our school systems, there have been numerous studies which have shown that students who particiapte in school sanctioned activities are more engaged and perform better in the classroom.  For several months, the Star-Tribune sports staff has been chronicling the unfortunate financial situation facing districts across the state. The money crunch is being seen at inner-city, suburban, and rural schools.
