Surprise: They're unbeaten
Around the Nation

With just a half-dozen games or so gone in the Division III basketball season, there's a long way to go for everyone. So while it's a little early to talk about running the table, it's not too soon to spotlight a few surprise unbeaten teams.

So congratulations to Ithaca, off to its best start since 1941 after going 6-0. And kudos to North Carolina Wesleyan, off to its best start since 1985, and Cabrini, which could be headed for its best season since firing John Dzik.

What sparked the turnarounds? More in this week's Around the Nation.

Plus, DePauw and Oglethorpe got knocked off track in the past week en route to their Friday night showdown, the first of their two Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference meetings.

For DePauw, it's been a tough early-season run after losing forward Jenna Fernandez, who was supposed to be the Tigers' leading returning scorer. For Lehman, the team which sidetracked the Tigers, it's just another example of the benefits of playing a tough non-conference schedule.

That and more in this week's Around the Nation.

Ranked and ready
The Top 25 men’s rankings got a makeover with the release of the first poll of the regular season on Monday. Nine new teams grabbed poll positions and five took them out for a spin for the first time tonight.

No. 18 St. Mary’s (Md.), which entered the Top 25 after winning the Provident Pride of Maryland tournament last weekend, defeated another instate opponent, Stevenson, 80-71. Alex Franz’s double-double (18 points, 11 rebounds) led the Sea Gulls whose ranking is their highest ever in the ten year history of the poll.

No. 12 Capital, which has been ranked in many polls before this year, stayed undefeated by downing Ohio Wesleyan 80-72. No. 19 Carnegie Mellon dumped Juniata 76-56.

The new ranking may be short-lived for No. 22 Transylvania which lost at Hanover 55-53 to open HCAC play. Roland Millien scored 22 points and pulled down 10 rebounds as Bridgewater State upset No. 20 Mass.-Dartmouth 89-87. More men’s scores.

In women's action, No. 15 UW-Eau Claire picked up its sixth win by knocking off Division II Minnesota-Duluth 67-52. Heather Witt's 22 points helped the Blugolds to their best start since 2004-2005.

No. 3 Kean had its first road game and its first single-digit margin of victory. The Cougars, who won their previous four games by an average of 31 points, held off Richard Stockton 88-80. No. 7 Hope won its 25th consecutive game against an MIAA foe, this time beating Albion 80-54. More women's scores.

In other men's action No. 2 UW-Whitewater survived North Central (Ill.) 62-54 to set up a Saturday showdown with No. 7 UW-Stevens Point. For the second year in a row Elizabethtown beat Division II MIllersville, this time by a count of 70-65. Maryville (Tenn.) did the same to Division II Carson-Newman in a 94-91 victory. Franklin & Marshall (5-0) stayed undefeated with a 79-66 win at Johns Hopkins.

Also scroll down to see the incredible shot that made Scott Morton a national sensation last night.

Geneseo wins on circus shot
Scott Morton appears to have made Geneseo State a household name, after his three-pointer gave the Knights a lead, then his over-the-back-of-the-head tip-in finished Oswego State off for an 85-84 win.

Highlights and interview from ESPN's First Take.

Geneseo, which received votes in this week's D3hoops.com Top 25, improved to 4-1 with its only loss coming Nov. 22 at current No. 9 Gettysburg.
