Trevor Mbakwe flicked on the television early one morning last spring and was surprised to see his coach, Tom Crean, reportedly was leaving Marquette University for Indiana. Two things made him skeptical about the news:
"I was like, 'yeah right, it's an April Fools' joke,' " said Mbakwe, a St. Paul native and sophomore forward at Marquette. "I couldn't believe it. Most of my teammates were sleeping. I didn't wake them up, but then an hour later we had a (team) meeting." It was no joke. Crean was leaving, which was almost too much to bear for Mbakwe, who already had battled adversity while returning from a knee injury to play at the end of last season. He admits now that he thought about transferring — maybe to play for the University of Minnesota. He never told anyone he was serious about it, but rumors started spreading that he was possibly returning to the Twin Cities. ---full story on TwinCities.com --- |
