When Hannah Draxten gets to Iowa, she’ll have a familiar face right along side her in Wahlin, a lefty point guard from Crookston. The 5-foot-8 senior is the pacesetter for a very good Pirates program that went the state finals two years ago. “Kamille is a great point guard. She is a very good ball handler and is great at breaking down a defense with her penetration,” said Draxten. Wahlin returned the favor: “Hannah is a great shooting guard and can shoot from anywhere. I’m excited to be her teammate next year.”
Wahlin averaged 19.9 points per game as a junior at Crookston, bumping her career averages to 16.5 points, 4.8 assists and 3.0 steals per game. On the varsity since her eighth-grade year, Whalin is already the school’s all-time record-holder in scoring, assists, steals and field goals, showing the range of her versatility. “I like to do a pull up jumper,” said Wahlin, who also was a state qualifier in the 400-meter dash and 4x400-meter relay for the Crookston track and field team. “Because of the teammates I have, I also like to drive and kick, because I have great shooting guards.” Wahlin said selecting Iowa over North Dakota and North Dakota State just felt like a natural fit. It’s a goal she’s had written on the wall of her room, “Basketball goal: Play for a Division 1 school.” Now she’s just a few months from that goal after signing her National Letter of Intent early this month. The Hawkeyes know what kind of player they’re getting. “Kamille has great quickness, plays tenacious defense and can score in a variety of ways,” said Iowa coach Lisa Bluder, who compared her to current Hawkeyes point guard Kristi Smith. “She is a scoring point guard.” |
