To say that Jackie Voigt is a well-rounded athlete is an understatement. The Park of Cottage Grove senior has earned All-State mention in soccer, track and field and basketball. But its hoops that will take her to the University of Minnesota next fall to play for coach Pam Borton. “Jackie has an exceptional work ethic and she plays with a lot of fire,” said Borton. “Her versatility, her competitiveness and work ethic are all strengths.”
“(She) instantly made an impact in our program. She came in with such a work ethic,” said Tolkinen. “Our program had been down for so many years that to bring Jackie and a few other ninth graders up to start, they were up to the challenge.”
After Voigt’s sophomore year, she began to get recruiting interest. Tolkinen received calls from some big-time programs in the nation’s heartland: Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa, Iowa State, Nebraska and of course, the Gophers. After visiting with Borton last summer, Voigt verballed and then followed Borton is intrigued by Voigt’s versatility, which both her current and former coach called her strength. “She can shoot the three as any guard and she can post up as well as any post. She’s a very versatile player and has great court sense,” said Tolkinen. “She understands the game.” |
